Donation will help fund museum operations for its millions of yearly visitors
This donation to the National Museum of African American History and Culture allows PNC to build upon its long-time support of the entire Smithsonian Institution,” said William S. Demchak, chairman, president and chief executive officer of The PNC Financial Services Group.

WASHINGTON, DC, Aug. 19, 2019 – PNC Bank, N.A., announced today that it has committed to a five-year investment of $1 million to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) to support its ongoing operations.

Since its opening in 2016, the National Museum of African American History and Culture has been one of the most visited museums of the Smithsonian Institution with more than six million people passing through its doors and spending four hours or more, on average, experiencing all that the museum has to offer. PNC’s donation will help the museum continue its mission of sharing the historical and cultural African American story with visitors through its collection of nearly 36,000 historical artifacts, thought provoking displays and interactive exhibitions.

“This donation to the National Museum of African American History and Culture allows PNC to build upon its long-time support of the entire Smithsonian Institution,” said William S. Demchak, chairman, president and chief executive officer of The PNC Financial Services Group. “What’s more, our ability to partner with and support the museum dovetails perfectly with the values that drive our corporate culture, where diversity and inclusion are foundational to how we think about the talent we bring into the company as well as the people, businesses and communities that we serve.”

With this donation Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank becomes a member of the museum’s Corporate Leadership Council, comprised of corporate donors with a shared commitment to contributing to the success of the museum. Richard Bynum, PNC regional president of Greater Washington will represent the bank in the relationship.

“We can all find ourselves in the story the museum reveals to us,” said Bynum. “Whatever your background, whatever your ethnicity, this is an American story about people who have persevered through trials and hardships and whose story has become, in many cases, the culture of America. The museum does the best job that I’m aware of demonstrating the roots of that story.”
